Till Death Do We Not Part - Chapter One

A/N: All characters are property of George Lucas.

Flash back – 14 years ago

Ani there you are,” A small brown haired girl approached a small blond haired boy, who was sitting in the shelter of his home, out of the hot Tatooine sun.

She said, “I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Mom finally let me out.”

I’ve been sitting here for almost half an hour waiting for you’ he teased. The young girl poked her tongue out in an act of defiance.

Do you know what is special about tomorrow?” She asked expectedly.

The boy nodded. “Yes, it’s your birthday…and I’ve brought your present here with me.” He handed the girl the small gift.

What is it?” She questioned him. He just gives her a mysterious smile. She quickly discards the wrapper and looks at it in amazement.

I carved it my self, it’s a japer necklace.” He smiles proudly.

It’s beautiful.’ The girl exclaimed as she placed it over her head. She leaned over and kissed his cheek.

Thank you.” He blushes and stared at her.

What is it?” She questioned

He stated, out of the blue, “One day I’m going to marry you. That I promise”

I can’t wait,” She laughed, as she fingers the pendent.

(End of flashback)

(Padme’s POV)

I suddenly snap back to the present, still holding the japer necklace given to me by Anakin. It has helped me through many of my troubled times; such as, my mother’s death, my father becoming Emperor and now having an arranged marriage to Darth Vader. He is my arch enemy. That man has no heart, he is nothing but evil! Not only is he my father’s second in command, he kills everyone that defies him. In addition, I realize I have never seen him without his armour. He is probably hideous, an uncivilized being.Again, I stroke the pendent gently, placing it underneath my top. I do not want to lose it. It is my only reminder of the happiest times I had as a child. My mind travels back to Anakin, the boy I met fourteen years ago. What is he like? Is he more handsome than he was as a boy? What kind of man is he? Would he know that I’ve changed my name from Padme to Amidala? How I wish he was here to rescue me!

My attention is raised by the doors to my bedroom hissing open. I look up to see my older sister, Sabe entering. With an ugly scowl marring her face, she rushes to the refresher.

I walk over to the refresher door concerned. “What is wrong, Sabe?”

“It’s none of your damn business,” She screams through the door. The door of the refresher opens and she is standing before me, tears rushing down her face.

“Why do you get everything?” She sobs.

“What are you talking about?” I ask puzzled, concern etched in my face.

She steps forward and screams, “You know what I’m talking about.”

“Sabe, what are you talking about?” I ask, now extremely confused.

“You know what I’m talking about. Quit playing dumb.” She screeches before turning to the door. I stare at her dumbfounded. What is going on?

“You will pay for this Amidala.” She stares at me with venom before turning and leaving the room.

I stand still as I realize my sister despises me. What for? I have no idea, but now I have created myself another adversary.

(Sabe’s POV)

How could she do this to me? I thought she knew me. I thought she knew that I love Darth Vader.I run as fast as I can to my bedroom. Entering it, I collapse on the bed and burst into tears. Three years ago, Darth Vader joined my father. Since I first laid my eyes on him I have loved him, even with the armour.

Now I have lost my only chance to be with him. I have lost him to my sister. She does not even like him! It’s a wasted relationship!

An evil thought enters my mind. I will try anything to break their arranged marriage. I remember the last words I spoke to my sister and grin.

“Watch out Amidala, I’m going to break off your engagement and you will regret that you ever stepped foot on my territory.” I smile as a million plans twirl through my mind.

I leave the grey of my bedroom behind and walk to my father’s throne room (on the death star). The storm troopers guarding my father announce my presence to him.

“Let her in,” I hear him command. I’m escorted into the room. Looking around, I notice Darth Vader standing near my father, nodding his head as my father spoke. I observe my father end the conversation with the nod of his head, but Darth Vader stands at his side.

“Sabe, what is it you want? More money, clothes, servants?” He looks at me alarmed.

“No father,” I speak.

I stare up at him into his brown eyes. “I want an audience with you alone.’” He looks surprise, for I had never asked for that before.

All the storm troopers leave, apart from Darth Vader. I gape at Vader. “I want you to leave too; this is between my father and I.” Darth Vader gazes at my father as if seeking permission to leave.

“You may leave my young apprentice.”

“Very well, master” He leaves us behind and my father turns to me.

“Now daughter, what is it you want that requires everyone to leave?”

‘It’s about Amidala and Vader.’ I take a deep breath before launching into my explanation, before exploding, “Why is it that Amidala should marry Vader? Why not me? You know how I feel father! Also she is younger than him. It should be me, we are the right age!”

He wipes away sweat from his brow and replies, “I know how you feel about Vader, I could sense it. However if you did marry Darth Vader, your emotions would have gotten in the way. Therefore you would not be able to be a good sith, a strong sith.”

“Still, why her?” I demand, “Why not someone else?”

“Who better than the daughter of the Emperor, and she does not have feelings for him.” He answers.

Feeling frustrated that I have received no better reply, I exit the room.

(Darth Vader’s POV)

I leave the room as the Emperor commands me. My last conversation with him puzzles me; marriage, marriage to his youngest daughter. She is a beauty unlike her sister; however, there are greater benefits to being married to the Emperor’s most beautiful daughter. No man will ever own her beauty apart from me.Leaving the throne room I decide to go and catch some sleep before my night duties. I walk silently through the corridor, my feet stomping against the metal floor.

I enter my bedroom; it is not too far from the daughters’ bedrooms or the Emperor’s. It’s rather bare, only a few personal items decorate my room. It contains nothing from my past life, those memories are too painful.

I remove my amour and the black helmet that covers my face. I take a deep breath in and shake my long blond hair loose. Free from the constraints of my armour I head to the refresher.

After a quick shower, I climb into my bed. Settling down, I prepare to sleep, but sleep does not come easily. A memory enters my mind from my past life as Anakin Skywalker.

The memory of me giving a young girl a present haunts me. I remember the promise of marriage I gave to her, and the hand carved necklace.

I try to remember her name as I fall back down into a deep uneasy sleep. Her image lingers in my mind as I sleep uneasily.

(Padme’ POV)I close my eyes and allow memories to sweep me away….I slouch on the hot sand, waiting for Ani to come along. Watto should have let him out by now. I squint at the twin suns above me. The air is dry and humid. I breathe in and exhale the air from my lungs. Where is he? A small young boy lingers in the background. I laugh and shout, “Ani! There you are!”He sniggers, but doesn’t come near me. He runs into the crowd. I giggle with delight. “Wait for me!” I run through the crowd, and lose sight of my best friend. Laughing wildly, I try to find him. I see his blond hair dance in the wind and leap around another corner. Scampering to the corner I jump on him. He squeals in surprise. We fall to the ground and instead of seeing a boy, I see a young man. He smiles at me, “I’ve missed you Padme.” I hold him close and weep. “I miss you so much Ani!”

I wish you were here too.” He whispers.

Anakin, you promised me, we’d be together! Why have you abandoned me?” I weep into his chest.

He brushes my hair back and says, “I wish…I’m not who I was back then, Padme.”

What-do you mean?” I stammer.

He chokes and stammers, “I can’t- stay…”

Anakin! NO!”

(Vader’s POV)

I sit up quickly, panting. What was that? Padme’… The girl I played with as a child… Her name is Padme….To Be Continued.

Far away.

A/N: The song belongs to Nickelback and the ideas came from reading plenty of fanfiction.

Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters in the story.

This time, This place
Misused, Mistakes
Too long, Too late
Who was I to make you wait
Just one chance
Just one breath
Just in case there’s just one left
‘Cause you know,
you know, you know

They lay in bed together, waking up after a fantastic night at the movies and dinner. Who knew Danny could be such a caring husband? They’d been married for over a year and now were expecting their first child. Mac had given her maternity leave and told her not to return until she was ready. Danny whole heartedly supported his decision. Who knew how lucky I am to get such a wonderful husband. She cuddles closer to her sleeping husband, cautious not to wake him. She loves watching him sleep.

That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you’ll be with me
and you’ll never go
Stop breathing if
I don’t see you anymore

The phone rings disturbing the pleasant silence. She knows it’s not hers, hers has not rung in the past five months. “Danny.” She smothers a grin as he groans and buries his head in her shoulder. Arms tightening around her waist. She shakes him. “Danny, your phone is ringing.” He looks up sleepily, blue eyes bleary before reaching for the phone on the bed side table. He flips it open.

“Messer here.”

She watches him as he climbs out the bed and heads to the kitchen. She wonders if she should follow him but decides not to. The bed is too warm to leave. After a while the talking in the kitchen seizes. She watches as he approaches the bedroom, watching her from the doorway.

“You’re beautiful, you know.”

She blushes.

“Get back into bed Messer,” She demands. He laughs at her but she can’t help laughing too.

On my knees, I’ll ask
Last chance for one last dance
‘Cause with you, I’d withstand
All of hell to hold your hand

He walks towards her, sitting next to her on the bed. He takes her into his lap placing both hands on her pregnant stomach. He nuzzles her long black hair.

“Honey, I know it’s meant to be my day off work but Mac called saying all available hands need to be at this scene.”

She nods understandingly. She knows Mac will never call people on their day off unless he is desperate. He gets up before heading to the bathroom to get ready.

I’d give it all
I’d give for us

Suddenly she’s hit by a sixth sense. She suddenly has an awful feeling something will happen to her husband. She has to try and stop him leaving. He comes out in his suit without a tie. She gives a tight smile as he’s about to leave. He notices she’s upset about something and heads over to her. She stands up out of the bed and plays with his collar as he tries to look into her eyes. He sees the tears and asks her what’s wrong.

“I feel something bad is going to happen out there Danny. Please don’t go.” He gives her a hug, pulling her close to him. He strokes her back gently.

“Nothing is going to happen. Don’t worry about it.” He murmurs into her ear. She nods, tears slightly under control. She buries her head into his jacket.

“I guess being pregnant makes you more sensitive, I never use to cry like this.” She quietly chuckles.

“Baby, I’ve got to go now or Mac will have my ass for being late.” She chuckles slightly louder at that.

“No wouldn’t want that, I quite like your ass. Go.” She shoves him out the door and watches him leave their small home in New York.

Give anything but I won’t give up
‘Cause you know,
you know, you know

She sits in the kitchen, flicking though the TV channels. Each one showing the crime scene Danny is working at. She searches every channel just to try and get a glimpse of her husband. Not one. She sits down in despair and switches the television off. Her black hair is wet from the shower she just took. She is dressed in one of Danny’s shirts with a loose pair of jogging trousers. They are her comfy clothes. Actually the only ones that fit nicely now. Suddenly a noise she has not heard in the past five months appears. She dashes to the bedroom as fast as she could and grabs the phone.

“Messer here,”

“Aiden, its Mac here.”

“Mac what has happened to Danny.”

“Aiden, Danny got shot and is now heading to hospital.”

That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you

She drops the phone as soon as the words “Danny got shot” comes through the phone. The words repeat in her head.

“Aiden, Aiden, damnit. Stella get over there and see what’s happened to Aiden.”

She hears these words before Mac hangs up. She sits on the bed, silent tears running down her cheek. Clutching her husband’s pillow and inhaling the scent. She has no sense of how long she has sat there, but the doorbell brings her out of her thoughts. She walks to the door and opens it and there stands Stella.

“Aiden, are you okay? Come on I’ll take you to the hospital, they are currently operating on him at the moment.”

Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you’ll be with me
and you’ll never go
Stop breathing if
I don’t see you anymore

They arrive at the hospital, she knows everyone is looking at her clothing but she doesn’t care. She has to see her husband. Stella holding her close leads her deeper into the hospital. They come to the waiting room, here she sees Mac, Flack, Hawkes and various other people who were at the scene. Mac, Hawkes and Flack come and see how she is holding up.

“What happened?”

Mac quietly explains.

“We thought the suspect was away from the scene, turns out he wasn’t and started shooting. We all ducked down in time. All apart from Danny. He got shot twice in the stomach.”

She sits quietly in the chair, whispering to her child “shhh, daddy’s going to be okay.” Before collapsing again, crying, into Stella’s arms. She never knew that she could cry this much.

So far away
Been far away for far too long
So far away

Been far away for far too long
But you know, you know, you know

“Is Aiden Messer here?”

The doctor calls out. She stands up and walks towards him. The rest of the group follow behind her. “Just Mrs. Messer please.” The doctor says and Mac shoots her a look saying ‘can you manage this on your own’. She nods.

The doctor takes her aside and says. “He got shot twice, one was a through and through bullet, the other got stuck inside. We operated and took out the remaining bullet. We are optimistic that he will be just fine but he did lose a lot of blood.”

She nods.

“Can I see him now doctor?”

The doctor nods,

“Be careful though he might be sleeping. He needs his rest.”

She follows him through into the room and sits in the plastic chair next to the bed. The doctor leaves silently and she takes his hand gently in hers. She brings it up to her lips and silently kisses it before crying gently against it.

The rest of the group are watching from the door way and decide its better to leave and come back later.

I wanted
I wanted you to stay
‘Cause I needed
I need to hear you say
That I love you

“I love you Daniel Messer.”

She whispers into the silence, aware the others have left. She watches him as he sleeps. She giggles as she sees his hands search for her in his sleep. He once joked he couldn’t sleep without her and now she knew it was the truth.

I have loved you all along
And I forgive you
For being away for far too long

She had been sitting in that chair for about half an hour and started feeling uncomfortable.

“Aiden?”

She jumped at the sound of her husband’s voice.

“Danny?”

She rushed to the bed and grabs his hand before crying again. He tries to sit up but realizes that’s a bad mistake. Instead he pulls her into the bed with him. She curls up against him and starts crying.

“Don’t you dare do that again Mr. Messer.”

She mumbles into his hospital gown, now out of tears. He says nothing, just content in the silence as he breathes in her scene.

So keep breathing
‘Cause I’m not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
‘Cause I’m not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing

They hear a knock on the hospital door and she shouts enter. Standing in the door way are Mac and Stella. They both look awkward as if entering an area they shouldn’t be in.

“Heya Mac, Stella.”

She hears her husband say.

“What is it?”

He laughs.

“We’re extremely sorry about the shooting and everything but then decided you can have the next two months off to recover.” Mac nods.

She looks up at her husbands face and sees the shocked expression on his face before it turns joyous.

“Thanks so much Mac. You don’t know how much that means to me.”

Mac nods again. Stella then approaches the bed with a bag in her hand.

“I saw this last week in a shop and thought how much you would love it.”

Stella hands the box to her and she opens it. Both her husband and her gasp.

“You shouldn’t have Stella. Its – its gorgeous.”

Stella just has a happy smile on her face.

“Well that’s for being good friends of mine.”

She says before she and Mac leave the room.

Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
Hold on to me and, never let me go

A month later:

“Oh my goodness, I swear never again.”

She moans giving her husband an evil look. He laughs.

“I don’t think you’ll be saying that in a couple of years.”

She hisses at him before another contraction causes her to moan.

“Aiden, just one more push.”

The doctor exclaims. She moans gripping Danny’s hand tightly.

“I can’t do it anymore. I’m too tired.”

She sighs. Danny kisses her head.

“You can, hon. You’re nearly there.”

He whispers as he kisses her sweaty forehead again. She groans before the doctor exclaims.

“A baby girl.”

He hands the baby to Danny who shows her to Aiden.

“Thank you so much for making this one of the happiest days of my life.”
